Why most people who approach functional mushrooms end up buying nothing — and what to do instead.
It always happens the same way.
Someone mentions it, or you read about it, and it catches your interest. You open your phone. You search.
And within ten minutes you're lost in a maze. Lion's Mane for focus. Reishi for stress. Cordyceps for energy. Chaga for antioxidants. Every page explains why theirs is the one you really need. Every forum has a different hierarchy. Every video starts with "if you could only pick one."
After twenty minutes you close the tab.
Not because you've lost interest. Because you don't have what you need to decide, and buying something at random that you'd have to take daily for two months feels — correctly — like a decision to put off.
That closed tab is the real reason most people never enter this category. Not the price. Not skepticism. The paralysis.

The problem is in the question
"Which one should I start with?" assumes you have to choose. And it assumes you have one problem.
But look at what your day actually looks like. At 3:30pm your head can't hold the document open anymore. At 7pm the gym is an idea you keep postponing. At 11:40pm you're in bed and your brain is still processing the 11am meeting. And for three weeks in November you carried around a cold that wouldn't go away.
That's not one problem. Those are four faces of the same load.
The Eastern traditions that have used these mushrooms for millennia, in fact, almost never used them one at a time. Historical formulations are combinations. The idea of the single, isolated mushroom, optimized for one symptom, is a recent invention — and it's a marketing invention, not an herbalist one.

What's inside, and why these four specifically
Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) — fruiting body. The mushroom with the white cascade of filaments, used for centuries in wellness practices across China and Japan, traditionally associated with supporting mental clarity. It's the one studied for erinacines and their relationship to NGF.
Cordyceps militaris — fruiting body. The cultivable Cordyceps species: the one that genuinely produces a fruiting body, unlike wild high-altitude sinensis. Traditionally linked to Qi, sustained vitality, and physical endurance. Produces cordycepin.
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) — fruiting body. The lacquered red mushroom, "mushroom of immortality," with over two thousand years of documented use. An adaptogen: traditionally associated with balance and recovery, not stimulation or sedation. Rich in triterpenes — the bitterness you taste is that.
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) — the black, charred-looking mass that grows on birch trees in the north. Used for centuries in Siberia and the Baltic countries, traditionally prepared as an infusion. It's the antioxidant profile in the formula.
Four mushrooms, four distinct roles, one single dose. One for focus, one for energy, one for balance, one for antioxidant and immune support.
As with the whole category, it needs to be said plainly: research on these mushrooms is ongoing, and to date no European authority has approved specific health claims. Anyone promising you a guaranteed result is selling you a promise.

The objection we always get — and the answer
Our single mushrooms declare 2,400 mg of beta-glucans per bottle. The 4-in-1 declares 1,800 mg. Same price: €28.90. Less active compound, same price. It looks like a rip-off. We owe you an explanation.
A single Lion's Mane bottle contains one mushroom, and all 2,400 mg come from it. In the 4-in-1, those milligrams are split across four different extracts — and the four species don't have the same beta-glucan density. Chaga in particular carries less than Lion's Mane, but it's there for something else: its antioxidants, not its beta-glucans.
We could have written "1,800 mg of polysaccharides" and made the number look much bigger. That's exactly what half the market does. We chose to declare beta-glucans and look smaller than we could.
And here's the practical part: if you wanted the same variety by buying the singles, you'd need four bottles, €115.60, four separate daily doses to remember.
The 4-in-1 isn't a diluted mushroom. It's how these mushrooms were used for most of their history.

The four questions to ask anyone
The jars on the market all look alike. From €10 to €45 for identical-looking formats. The tools to tell them apart are four questions. What matters isn't so much the answer: it's that there is one.
1. Which part of the mushroom — and do they say so?
The fruiting body is the part that emerges, where the mushroom concentrates its characteristic compounds. The mycelium is the filamentous network that, in industrial production, grows on grain. Neither is dishonest on its own — for some species mycelium is the technically unavoidable choice. What's dishonest is not saying so.
Our answer: all four extracted from organic fruiting body. On the label.
2. Extraction ratio?
"20:1" = twenty kilos of raw material for one kilo of extract. If it's not declared, there's almost always no extraction at all.
Our answer: 20:1 across all four. On the label.
3. How much active compound, in numbers?
Beta-glucans are the measurable marker. Total polysaccharides are the trick: they include the substrate's starch.
Our answer: 1,800 mg of beta-glucans per bottle. Beta-glucans, not polysaccharides. On the label.
4. Where is it made?
Mushrooms absorb from their substrate with remarkable efficiency, heavy metals included. The EU requires traceability and limits that are optional elsewhere.
Our answer: made in the European Union. Organic, vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO.
The cost
30 ml bottle, dropper, 0.5–1 ml daily in a glass of water. At the recommended dose it lasts 30 to 60 days. €28.90. That's less than 50 cents a day for four mushrooms.
And most of all: one single decision, instead of that browser tab you were about to close twenty minutes ago.
If after two months you want to go deeper on one of the four, you'll know which — because by then you'll have tried them all.
More energy. More clarity. More balance. One bottle.
